Can a narcissist be aware of their narcissism
12 February 2023
When we think of narcissists, we may imagine someone who is completely oblivious to their own flaws and shortcomings. However, the reality is that some narcissists may be fully aware of their own narcissism and may even use it as a tool for manipulation or self-promotion.
...a grandiose narcissist may view their arrogance and sense of entitlement as positive traits...
In some cases, narcissists may be consciously aware of their tendencies, but may not see them as problematic. For example, a grandiose narcissist may view their arrogance and sense of entitlement as positive traits that set them apart from others. Similarly, a vulnerable narcissist may recognize their need for attention and validation, but may see this as a necessary means of protecting themselves from further harm.
On the other hand, some narcissists may recognize their tendencies and behaviors as problematic, but may struggle to change or address them. This may be due to a number of factors, including fear of vulnerability or a belief that their narcissism is necessary for success or survival.
It's also worth noting that not all individuals with narcissistic traits or narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) will be aware of their own behavior. Some may be completely unaware of how their actions are impacting others, or may be in denial about their own tendencies.
Ultimately, the question of whether a narcissist can be aware of their narcissism is a complex one that depends on a number of factors, including the individual's level of self-awareness and their willingness to seek help and address their issues.
